Dániel Jankovics: „I won my first national championship in this stadium”
The first stop of the Hungarian Grand Prix series in Tatabánya has an important place in Dániel Jankovics’s calendar. We talked to the high jumper of MTK Budapest about the indoor season, his form and the training camps.
– We have just started to make training a little lighter and ease the load while increasing the intensity to make sure that we can be in our best form during the outdoor season. I feel great, I have developed a lot. There are a lot of technical things that I have to pay attention to, as my movement did not fully come together in the indoor season. If I can solve these problems, I think I can break my personal record.
– What did you have in mind? Your indoor record is 2.24 meters and your outdoor is 2.21 at the moment.
– I cleared 2.21 at last year’s MEFOB and generally I get better results outdoors, – though my current indoor personal best is better – so I am optimistic about the upcoming competitions.
– Let’s talk about the 2.33 Olympic qualifying standard!
– I feel that it is a bit far off, but the best 32 qualify for the Tokyo Olympics based on the world rankings and I got a lot of points for finishing 8th in the indoor European Championships in Torun. If I can get good results in May and June and get a personal best at the Hungarian Nationals, you never know…
– How much do you think about the 2023 World Championships that is going to be hosted by Budapest?
– It could be a very important milestone in my career. It motivates me very much that I could show what I can do in front of the home crowd.
– How well do you know Grosics Gyula Stadium which is the venue of the Hungarian Grand Prix that takes place in June?
– I won my first youth national championship there, at the age of 13. After that, we had been visiting the stadium every year for the national championships, so I have a lot of fond memories of that place, and I am looking forward to the first weekend of June.
